To be honest, yes, a dot com (.com) domain extension is a more trusted domain extension. However, trust also depends upon the domain name and the type of content you have on your website.
I have a website that has a dot in (.in) extension, which is because it is targeted to the Indian Market, but this doesn't make it less trustworthy. I have gained several backlinks from big brands from the USA and some European countries as well.
This is because the content that I post on that website is informational and well-researched and also has good backing from experts from the industry that I talk about. So, one can say that, while people trust dot com, people also gain trust by the content that you have on your website.
This is also true. When you choose a dot in (.in) or dot ca (.ca), you are trying to target a location-specific market. But when you take a dot com (.com) domain extension, you are perceived as a global brand.
Because of country dynamics also there may be access issues when you use a specific domain extension. For example, some country-wide domain extensions are only allowed for people of a particular country, which is not the case with a dot com (.com) domain extension.
Also, search engines like Google try to filter out websites based on domain extensions to provide more relevant content as per location, which might not be the case every single time, but most of the time it is definitely the case.
Search engines like Google want to ensure that people get relevant searches every time they search for something, so the best bet is on location-based domain extensions as most of them focus on a particular location.
All these domains make sense when you have not got a .com domain extension for your website or if all of the .com ones are sold out. Plus, if you are a non-profit organization then taking a .org makes more sense.
Some people consider .xyz as spam, but Google's parent company "Alphabet", also has a domain name as abc.xyz, which makes sense.
Having said that .net is also a good old domain extension and not many people use it these days, but it was a legit and lit domain extension in the olden days. I still remember associating.net domains as more of technology-driven websites.
On the other hand, .co has emerged as a substitute for .com domains. If your domain name is already used by someone else for a .com domain extension, then you can use a .co instead.
There are several other domain names also available like .io, .blog, and .info, but it is always better to go with a .com domain as most people these days remember .com rather than some other domain extension.
So, if you are planning to buy a website, go ahead with a .com domain extension, but if you can't find one, others should also work just fine. You will just need to have good content and you are good to go ahead with both .com or any other domain extension for that case.
It doesn't matter if you have a .com or some other domain extension if the content you provide is not that good or doesn't add value, your website won't work, but if your website really makes sense and if you provide value to your visitors, any domain should work perfectly fine.
